NEW AMERICAN BIBLE REFERENCE (9 Fruits)
Galatians 5:22-23 shares with us, “In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”
FAITH DOCTRINE REFERENCE (12 Fruits)
Catechism of the Catholic Church #1832: The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: "charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity [1].
NEW AMERICAN BIBLE FOOTNOTES FOR CCC REFERENCES
[1]- Galatians 5:22-23 (vulg.) - The sole reference used by the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1832 for the Fruits of the Holy Spirit is Galatians 5:22-23 (Paul’s letter to their Church). It does not reference the current New American Bible 2011 revised edition, which lists 9 Fruits of the Spirit.
Alternately, the CCC refers to the Latin Vulgate (or Bible), which was translated from Hebrew and Aramaic by Saint Jerome between 382 and 405 CE. The Vulgate was the previous standard used by the Church for over one and a half millennia. The Vulgate lists the same 12 Fruits of the Spirit as the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
